Spanish scientists coated ordinary cotton with two dyes. Under lamp light the fabric kills bacteria on its own, and in hospital rooms it collected three quarters fewer microbes than plain cotton.

At ETH Zurich, engineers wove a 130-micrometre glass strand into an ordinary T-shirt and turned it into a sound sensor — without a single transistor. The fabric recognises touch, hand gestures and the rhythm of breathing.
